Interconnected transit-to-venue navigation cluster — step-by-step guidance within and between stations and nearby indoor venues

First live deployment at Tampines MRT Station — Waymap's first major deployment in Southeast Asia

Tampines MRT Station and Punggol MRT-LRT Station are large, complex interchange stations with multiple transport links and high volumes of regular commuters. Sam Kee LRT Station is a smaller station with a simpler layout. Together they form the centrepiece of Waymap's first major deployment in Southeast Asia — a comprehensive, interconnected navigation system that extends to outdoor areas throughout Singapore.

The deployment was designed to enhance accessibility and wayfinding for the three stations, and to demonstrate a scalable model applicable across Singapore's broader public transit infrastructure.

The cluster model

A defining feature of the Singapore deployment is the “cluster” approach — where a transit station and a nearby indoor venue within walking distance are connected into a seamless navigation system. Waymap has been deployed in the areas connecting these venues, enabling step-by-step navigation guidance within and between each cluster. This is a world-first for this type of solution at Waymap's level of accuracy.

"Children's Hospital in Edinburgh is beautiful. It's new. But it's just not simple to find your way around. It wasn't great for families when they were arriving at a time where it's stressful and they're anxious. And if doctors and nurses are spending all their time guiding people around, then we can't do the stuff that we need to do."

Deployment

The deployment was completed in phases. Tampines MRT Station went live first in November 2023, followed by Punggol MRT-LRT Station and Sam Kee LRT Station. Each station required individual mapping and configuration, with the system designed to support interconnection between venues and live transit data integration.

Technical specification

The solution provides step-level accuracy in all locations within each station, including key accessibility features: step-free routing, audio and on-screen instructions, operating system accessibility feature compliance, personalised step counts, and tailored route preferences. The system eliminates reliance on GPS, Wi-Fi, or any installed hardware.

Live transit data and outdoor integration

The deployment encompasses live transit data integration and extends to outdoor areas throughout Singapore, creating a continuous multimodal navigation experience from a passenger's starting point to their final indoor destination.

Outcomes

Testing conducted among diverse user groups across the Singaporean deployment sites demonstrated strong navigation performance, with users successfully reaching intended destinations across the complex multi-level environments of Tampines and Punggol Stations.

Scalability demonstrated

The SBS Transit deployment demonstrates the cluster model at scale — a connected ecosystem of transit stations and nearby indoor venues linked by seamless navigation. Singapore is positioned as a global example of what city-scale accessible wayfinding can look like when built on infrastructure-free technology.
